Further pharmacological properties which are an important subject for research are: antiviral, anti-microbial, anti-tumoral and tissue-protective.
Betulinic acid as promising anticancer therapy is getting analysed thoroughly. Non-malignant cells and normal tissues do not get affected, it acts mitochondrion-targeted on cancer cells and triggers cell death. The most recent publication is about the influence of birch bark triterpenes on keratinocytes and fibroblasts from diabetic and nondiabetic donors. Impaired wound healing is a main risk factor in diabetes. Birchbark extract, respectively Betulin might be an interesting treatment option.
