 |  The gentle cure of homeopathy which was founded by the German doctor, chemist and pharmacist Samuel Hahnemann (1755 - 1843) is becoming increasingly recognised as a real alternative to orthodox medicine. Its basic principle, reflected in the term homeopathy is the principle of similarity: "similar ailments will be cured by similar material."
The basic material is plants e.g. the nightshade (Belladonna) has a fever reducing effect, animals like the Spanish fly (Cantharis) help against acute diseases of the urinary passage and minerals like common salt (Natrium chloratum) that alleviates psychological trouble.
The medicine is supposed to activate the self-healing powers of the human body. It is obtained from the starting substances by shaking these gradually with a mixture of alcohol and water, while the information of the drug merges with the solvent.

| In contrast to the orthodox medicine, homeopaths do not use drugs to fight "against" diseases but agents that will in high dose rates produce symptoms in a healthy person which are similar to the diseases that they are supposed to cure. The onion e.g. causes tears and a running nose when chopping it and therefore is considered an appropriate remedy for a cold.
Moreover the effect of a drug is, according to the homeopathic doctrine, the stronger, the more it is thinned and shaken. Thus poisonous starting substances such as the nightshade, arsenic or snake-venom may be processed. The individual customisation when selecting a drug which is among other things achieved by considering the patient´s characteristic traits, preferences and aversions is one of the strong points of homeopathy.
To put it in a nutshell, homeopathy is simple, gentle and can be applied effectively and scientific research proves its effect. Combination preparations containing more than one active agent and also called the "second generation of homeopathic drugs" are a mentionable innovation.
