Pharmaceutical Raw Materials - Information
 |
 | Pharmaceutical raw materials are the basis of the production of drugs and can be divided into three categories:
Natural products are drugs with vegetable ingredients called Phytopharmaka. These days the majority of these are no longer being extracted from biological material but produced (semi) synthetically or biotechnologically because this is safer, cheaper and faster. Paclitaxel (remedy for cancer) or the group of Cyclosporine (immune suppresiva) are examples for this.
APIs produced by chemical synthesis are still the most commonly used agents.
Agents produced by genetic engineering (e.g. Insulin) belong to the third group of pharmaceutical raw materials and are produced in bioreactors using micro-organisms or mammalian cells.
