In traditional medicine, the plant was used to soften skin and mucous membranes. The mucousifying effect makes the plant preparation ideal for treating inflammation of the respiratory tract, mouth and throat, and the digestive tract. The mucus of the marshmallow root forms a protective film on the mucous membranes, which particularly provides relief from annoying dry coughs.<\/p><p>When used externally, marshmallow is effective against seborrheic eczema, a scaly skin disease. And small children also benefit from the plant: Chewing on a marshmallow root can relieve unpleasant pain when teething.<\/p><p>The marshmallow slime is largely obtained from the root. Marshmallow preparations contain cut or powdered root.
