Active ingredient of the month May: Etofenamate

The non-steroidal anti-inflammatory etofenamate belongs to the group of anthranilic acid derivatives with analgesic properties.

Etofenamate has a fast effect because it is well absorbed through the skin. Because it is applied locally, systemic side effects are less common compared to orally administered NSAIDs.

Etofenamate is a yellowish, viscous liquid that is virtually insoluble in water.
Its analgesic and anti-inflammatory effect is due to the inhibition of cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase.

Medicines with etofenamate are effective against inflammation and swelling when used externally, for example:

• Bruises
• Sprains
• Strains
• rheumatic complaints

Etofenamate is available in the form of gels, sprays and patches.
