Mycotoxins

Mycotoxins are secondary metabolites of molds fungis which have a very toxic effect on human being. The species of Mycotoxins subdivide to aflatoxins, fumonisines, ochratoxins and fusarium toxins. The name mycotoxin is usually reserved for the toxic chemical products formed by a few fungal species in i.e. crops in the field or after harvest and thus pose a potential threat to human and animal health through the ingestion of food products. Just before Christmas 1960 the death of 100 00 turkey poults was caused by aflatoxins, this incident  illustrates the potential threat posed by mycotoxins.
