Indium is a rare, silver-white, very soft and hand-formable heavy metal. It has a low melting temperature and is resistant to air at room temperature and water. Indium can oxidize by adding moisture and heat. At higher temperatures it burns with a blue flame to yellow indium (III) oxides. Despite the limitation for technical use, indium is used to harden other metals as an alloy component. Further applications can be found in the jewellery industry, in metallic adhesives, in glass colours, in mirrors for wetting glass with a metal layer and as a transparent conductor for flat screens and touch screens.
