Alkannin

Plant: Alcanna root (Alkanna tinctoria).

• Is a dye, used for coloring food, cosmetics and medicines
• It dyes deep red in fatty, oily environment, purple in basic environment

Effect:

• Alkannin exhibits antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and S. epidermidis
• The drug was used as a wound ointment in ancient times and is used in more recent studies for the treatment of varicose veins. However, its efficacy has not yet been adequately demonstrated.

• Toxicity:
  has a laxative effect and stains urine and feces
