Some of the key characteristics of beta-Propiolactone are: ß-Propiolactone is an excellent sterilizing and sporicidal agent. It is used as i.e. virus inactivator and as sterilisation agent for vaccines. Aquous solutions of 0.2 to 0.4% are active over a broad pH-range. beta-Propiolactone decomposes in aqueous solutions over few hours and no residue of the toxic lactone is detectable any longer. ß-Propiolactone is an organic compound of the cactone family, with a four-membered ring. The IUPAC name is Oxetan-2-one or 3-Hydroxypropanoid acid lactone.
