Naturally occurring triterpene. It is possible to convert it to betulinic acid.

Plant: birch cork, in low concentrations in the roots and leaves of white ash (Fraxinus americana) and in the leaves and bark of American mountain ash (Sorbus americana).

  • Betulin does not dissolve in water, but does in chloroform

 

Uses:

  • Betulin-containing drugs (Episalvan) approved for the treatment of dermal wounds in adults.
  • Also used as an emulsifying additive in hair shampoos.
