Cyclopenin is an unusual benzodiazepine metabolite produced by a number of Penicillium species. Cyclopenin inhibits the growth of etiolated wheat (Triticum aestivum) coleoptile segments. Cyclopenin is an intermediate in the biosynthesis of the viridicatins, strong inhibitors of the tumor necrosis factor a (TNF)-induced replication of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
