Genistein is an isoflavone with anticancer, antiproliferation, and chemopreventive effects. It induces cell differentiation. Genistein inhibits protein histidine kinase.

Plant: found in soybean (Glycine max) and red clover (Trifolium pratense, Fabaceae)

  • Absorbed in food and can be detected in serum of humans and animals
  • Leads to accelerated capacitation (maturation process of female sperm cells) of sperm cells in the female genital tract, currently under investigation whether fertility is not reduced by a premature acrosome reaction
  • Tumor research: it is being investigated whether the substance or the application of e.g. soy extracts has a positive effect on tumor growth, since genistein inhibits FGF-2-induced angiogenesis due to inhibition of tyrosine kinase, uPA (urokinase) and upregulation of PAI-1
