Medicinal Plant of the Month for October: Vervain (Verbena officinalis)

The name of our medicinal plant of the month October is no coincidence, because: In the past it was used to treat injuries caused by iron weapons and it also played a role in iron smelting: Vervain (Verbena officinalis).

Vervain – miracle weapon against various ailments

The healing properties of verbena were discovered in ancient times. Even then it was known for its diuretic, analgesic and calming effects. It works against many ailments, for example against typical cold symptoms such as cough or sore throat. It can also be used for wounds that heal poorly or eczema. Due to its diuretic effect, it can help against cystitis in the form of tea and also promotes digestion. It can even bring relief from stomach and menstrual cramps or heartburn and last but not least it has a calming effect if you are nervous or have trouble sleeping.

Verbena is also known for its blood and milk-forming effect, but should not be consumed during pregnancy due to its labor-inducing property.

Use as a tea infusion or poultice

Leaves and flowers of Verbena officinalis can be used for tea infusions. For eczema or skin inflammation, the tea is applied externally in the form of poultices.

Verbena officinalis is an annual herbaceous plant. It reaches growth heights of up to 75 centimeters. The upright stem is square and slightly hairy. The small, soft pink leaves are also hairy on their underside. The leaf blade is roughly toothed, lobed to deeply pinnate. The plant flowers from May to October. If you want to plant the verbena yourself, offer it a sunny location with humus-rich soil. The plant should be watered daily but does not tolerate waterlogging.
