Bongkrekic acid is a toxin produced in fermented coconut contaminated by the cacterium Burkholderia gladioli pathovar cocovenenans. It is highly toxic because the compound inhibits the ADP/ATP translocase. Besides this it inhibits the Glutathione transferase inhibitor as well. Bongkrekic acid is a p potent inhibitory ligand of the mitochondrial adenine nucleotide translocase (ANT). It inhibits mitochondrial permeability transition pore opening. Delivery of bongkrekic acid to the mitochondria prevents apoptosis in HeLa cells.
