Active Ingredient of the Month December: Riboflavin-5′-Phosphate
Riboflavin-5′-phosphate is also known as flavin mononucleotide (FMN) and is an active form of vitamin B2 (riboflavin). It plays a central role in human metabolism and is used as a pharmaceutical active ingredient.
Riboflavin is an essential vitamin found in milk, eggs, meat and green vegetables, for example. In the body, riboflavin is converted into the active form, i.e. riboflavin-5′-phosphate, by the enzyme riboflavin kinase.
The active form is a coenzyme for various oxidoreductases and is important for energy metabolism and cell regeneration.
There are various medical applications for riboflavin-5′-phosphate.
1. Ophthalmology: In ophthalmology, the active ingredient is used to treat corneal dystrophies and keratoconus. When combined with UV light, it can improve and strengthen the structure of the cornea.
2. Dermatology: Riboflavin-5′-phosphate has antioxidant properties and may be useful for conditions such as acne or rosacea. It generally supports skin regeneration.
3. Neurology: Riboflavin-5′-phosphate shows success in the treatment of migraines and mitochondrial diseases. It improves energy production in the cells and relieves symptoms.
Last but not least, riboflavin-5′-phosphate contributes to general well-being as a dietary supplement. Through its positive function on the nervous system, it supports mental health and counteracts fatigue.
