Product of the Month May: Plant-based Cholesterol – Research Reagent
Cholesterol: An essential component of the lipid cocktail in vaccines
For the administration of vaccines, a so-called “lipid cocktail” is required, in which cholesterol plays a central role. Lipids are largely water-insoluble natural substances that, together with the mRNA fragment, form lipid nano-particles. These particles protect the vaccine and enable its safe transport into the cells.
Synthetic cholesterol is of great importance here, as it contributes to the stabilization of lipid nano-particles and releases the vaccine inside the cell.
No risks from contamination
So far, cholesterol has been obtained from animal sources, such as fat from sheep wool or animal tissue. However, this process carries risks, such as the transmission of spongiform encephalopathy, which can lead to severe brain damage. In addition, undesirable immune reactions and fluctuating product quality can occur.
By synthetically producing cholesterol from plant raw materials, these risks can be avoided, as there are no contaminants.
