Active ingredient of the month for July: paclitaxel
Our active ingredient of the month, paclitaxel, is used to treat various types of cancer. Paclitaxel is able to inhibit the division and proliferation of cancer cells.
Cytostatic agent from the Pacific oak
Paclitaxel is a cytostatic agent and belongs to the group of taxanes. It is extracted from the bark of the Pacific yew tree and is mainly used against ovarian and breast cancer. Paclitaxel interferes with the division of cancer cells and belongs to the subgroup of mitotic inhibitors.
In the course of cell division, microtubules are formed. At the decisive moment, these are capable of attracting duplicate chromosomes. In this way, they ensure the formation of an independent cell.
Stabilization of the microtubules disrupts cell structure
In contrast to the cytostatic drug vinblastine and the gout preparation colchicine, both of which have an inhibiting effect on microtubule formation, paclitaxel can prevent their degradation. Thus, an abnormal bundle structure of the microtubule develops in the course of the cell cycle, which leads to the obstruction of genetic division. By stabilizing the microtubules, the internal structure of the cell is also disturbed.
Because paclitaxel affects all dividing cells, there is a higher risk of side effects. However, cancer cells are increasingly affected by it because they divide particularly quickly.
This active ingredient is also suitable if tumor remnants have remained in the body after a surgical procedure and if metastases occur.
