Active ingredient of the month October: zinc sulphate
Zinc sulfate is an inorganic compound. It occurs naturally in food and water. The human body relies on a certain amount of zinc, which is why it is used as a dietary supplement. Zinc sulfate is easily soluble in water. When heated to high temperatures, especially in the presence of reducing agents, it decomposes to form zinc oxide, sulfur dioxide, sulfur trioxide and oxygen. From aqueous solution, zinc sulphate crystallizes as heptahydrate, which forms colorless, shiny, columnar, rhombic crystals.
In nature, zinc sulphate is found anhydrous as zinosite, as heptahydrate, in the form of goslarite (also called white vitriol). The production of zinc sulfate is carried out by treating almost all zinc-containing materials with sulfuric acid. For pharmaceutical purposes, zinc sulfate is produced by treating high-purity zinc oxide with sulfuric acid.
Zinc sulfate is used in medicine in combination with oral rehydration therapy and a blood thinner. It has antibacterial, antifungal, anti-plaquce, antiviral and astringent effects.
As an active ingredient from the group of antivirals, zinc sulphate is also used in gel form for the prevention and treatment of cold sores. The effects are based on the inhibition of virus replication.
