Paeonol – an actor against cancer related inflammation (CRI)

In mouse melanoma cells paeonol had an effect on cell proliferation, apoptosis and the secretion of proinflammatory cytokines, like TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6 and TGF-β. In vivo the results showed an attenuation of lung metastases accompanied by a downregulation of proinflammatory cytokines in the serum. The authors indicate that the anti-tumor activity of this compound is mainly reached by interruption of NF-κB and STAT3 signaling pathways. Hence natural compounds like paeonol have a promising potential as adjuvant cancer therapy.
